After two decades of anticipation, Guggenheim Abu Dhabi is set to open its doors on 11 December 2026, completing the trio of landmark museums in the Saadiyat Cultural District. Designed by Frank Gehry and developed with the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation, it will be the largest Guggenheim in the world and one of the most talked-about cultural openings in the region.
The building itself is a work of art. Around a central atrium, a cluster of galleries is crowned by ten sculptural cones reaching up to 88 metres, inspired by traditional wind towers and designed to bring shade and natural ventilation. Alongside some 11,600 square metres of indoor gallery space, around 23,000 square metres of outdoor areas will host large-scale works under the open sky.
The collection focuses on art from the 1960s to the present across painting, sculpture, photography, installation, moving image and new media. Rather than following a strict timeline or geography, the displays trace conversations between artists from different cultures. Names associated with the collection include Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko, Andy Warhol and Jean-Michel Basquiat, shown alongside artists from the Arab world, Africa and Asia, plus newly commissioned works.
Opening weeks are expected to be busy, so planning ahead is wise. Visitors under 18 and residents aged 60 and over are currently eligible for free entry.
