Imagine stepping into a downpour and staying dry. Rain Room, created by the London- and Berlin-based art collective Random International, does exactly that: a dark hall filled with continuous falling water that pauses wherever a person walks, thanks to motion sensors tracking every movement. The result is a quietly astonishing experience that blends art, science and a little bit of magic.

Sharjah Art Foundation opened its permanent Rain Room in May 2018 as part of its collection, making it one of the few places in the world where the work can be experienced on a lasting basis. Visits run in small timed groups (up to seven people at a time) for a session of about 15 minutes, so the atmosphere stays calm and contemplative. The single shaft of light and the sound of rain create a striking setting for reflection and, naturally, for memorable photographs.

Good to know before you go

Move slowly: quick movements can outpace the sensors and leave you damp. Pointed high heels, umbrellas and rain gear are not allowed, and food and drink are not permitted inside. Children must be supervised at all times. You should arrive about 10 minutes before your slot. Weekend and public holiday slots often sell out, so requesting your preferred date early is wise, and the installation may close briefly during the day for maintenance.

It pairs well with a Sharjah city tour or an afternoon at Al Noor Island.
